Old Gaol Wall Demolition

The Committee discussed the proposed demolition of the courtyard walls at the Old Gaol. A. Hart discussed the fact that the Committee had requested a report in 2019 discussing the proposed future use of the space which they had not yet received and that the Cultural Centre Feasibility study was still ongoing which would likely provide guidance into the future use of the space.

R. Macklem discussed the old study that had been done on the space suggesting that the courtyard walls could be roofed and turned into an extension of museum space. He suggested that this indicated that the walls were not structurally unsound at all. The Committee agreed that the engineer's report they were provided which only provides a visually analysis was not sufficient to determine if the structure was stable.

I. McKechnie noted that the courtyard was significant to the social history of the gaol and its cultural heritage value.
