P. Warren called the meeting to order at 2:32 p.m.  D. Pearson, J. Morris, V. Colling, D. Lowles, B. Snider, J. Feltham and Councillor T. Richardson were in attendance.

Staff present were Manager of Planning R. Holy, Director of Development Services C. Marshall, and Recording Secretary E. Hallett.

 

Absent: R. James, R. Megraw, K. Quinn and K. Virgoe.

    That Item 5.2 Bill 229 and Item 5.3 Roadside Tree Planting be added to the Agenda, and that the Agenda be adopted as amended.

C. Marshall, Director of Development Services provided an update on the progress of the Healthy Environment Plan. Mr. Marshall reported that he met with Denise Williams and Ron Taylor to discuss next steps with the Healthy Environment Plan.

An internship with a Trent University student will be offered to help implement the Healthy Environment Plan. 

Next steps include:

  • Background research
  • Research best practices in other communities
  • Survey and interview stakeholders (City staff and community members)
  • Identify City staff and community stakeholders for each theme/program area and build consensus on the implementation schedule
  • Seek funding for various program initiatives
  • Construct a governance structure for the future of the Healthy Environment Plan
  • Prepare a presentation for Council

 

Members discussed the role of CKLEAC and the possibility of developing a sub committee similar to Bee City, that could meet, report to CKLEAC and then to the City.

P. Warren and D. Pearson met to review the nominations received for the Environmental Hero awards. Eight nominations were received for the Environmental Business Hero Award, but one was from the Peterborough area, so could not be considered, leaving a total of seven nominations for the Environmental Business Hero Award. One nomination was received for the Youth Environmental Hero Award.  Every nominee would be considered an Environmental Hero.

Environmental Youth Hero Recipient:

  • King Albert School – Grade 5/6 Leadership Team

 

Next steps include:

  • A press release through the Communications Division
  • Letters prepared and sent to the recipients
  • Zoom Invitations to the Committee of the Whole meeting sent to the recipients
  • Preparations of the Certificates suitable for window display for each of the recipients

 

D. Pearson expressed concerns regarding Bill 229, and queried what CKLEAC as a whole could do to assist. Councillor T. Richardson confirmed that she would circulate documentation she had on the subject to committee members. Members agreed they would read the documentation and think about next steps.

 

B. Snider expressed concerns regarding the fact that Maple and Ash trees are disappearing. Mr. Snider commented that assistance programs to landowners seems to work well in other areas. Information was provided to CKLEAC members by Councillor T. Richardson pertaining to the Trees for Rural Roads program.   CKLEAC members look forward to having a KRCA member rejoin the Committee to provide insight.

The next CKLEAC meeting will be held on January 28th, 2021 at 2:30 pm via Zoom.
