Presentation by Chris Marshall, Director of Development Services

C. Marshall, Director of Development Services provided a presentation on the Healthy Environment Plan. The presentation touched on the impacts of climate change, emission levels, and outlined the visions and goals of the Healthy Environment Plan. Mr. Marshall focused on the 24 strategies, as well as themes incorporated into the plan, and the various partnerships being investigated and formed with entities such as Fleming College, conservation authorities, cottage associations, home builders, farmers, etc.  Mr. Marshall summarized some of the initiatives including the new Human Services building, Fleet / Transit buses, the Active Transportation Plan, implementation of Lake Management Plans, storm water strategies and the Tree Preservation By-law.

Next steps for this year include developing the Active Transportation Plan.  CKLEAC agrees to continue to try to educate the public regarding the Healthy Environment Plan.

Migratory Song Birds and Roadside Spraying

R. Holy will prepare a report in the first quarter to be presented at Committee of the Whole. It was recommended that CKLEAC members attend the meeting to provide insight and support.

Plastics Reduction

Brainstorming brought forth the following suggestions:

  • The production of tent cards to be located at the check outs of local businesses prompting cashiers to use alternate phrases for offering single use plastic bags – for example, do you “need” a bag?
  • The production and placement of reminder signs in grocery store parking lots and the downtown core reminding patrons to bring in reusable bags
  • Connecting with the BIA and requesting assistance in sending out the message
  • The production and use of stickers on entrance doors of local businesses reminding patrons to use reusable bags

P. Warren suggested meeting with David Kerr, Manager of Environmental Services to discuss next steps.  D. Pearson, V. Colling, D. Lowles, and J. Morris agreed to attend the meeting.

Environmental Hero

Councillor T. Richardson agreed to contact the Communications Division regarding the advertising for the Hero Awards.  Efforts will be made to ensure it is promoted as soon as possible.

Ideas of having a category for Business Environmental Hero were brought forward.  CKLEAC agreed this would be an excellent idea.  Members decided that the Business Environmental Hero category shall replace the former Adult Environmental Hero award.

V. Colling made a brief summary of the situation and spoke of several nearby communities who are now on the list. V. Colling stressed the importance and need for CKLEAC to “Educate and Communicate” on the issue. V. Colling will begin to prepare a resolution for the committee and further discussion will ensue at January’s CKLEAC meeting.

Moving forward in 2020, CKLEAC members agreed to reduce the number of work plans, and have all members concentrate and channel all efforts into these projects. The committee chose 3 projects, and divided up as follows:

Plastics Reduction – P. Warren, D. Pearson, V. Collings, J. Morris and D. Lowles

Pollinator Action Committee – P. Warren, K. Quinn, J. Feltham, D. Pearson, B. Snider (and volunteer K. Molloy)
