Members debated the pros and cons of the use of ATV’s and ORV’s on City roads.
Discussion included topics such as safety concerns, accident rates, carbon emissions, assorted statistics, potential loss of trail use, the Active Transportation Master Plan, connecting trail heads, local trail systems, ATV use in other municipalities, potential income for local business, tourism, potential of excluding urban areas, driveway to destination routes versus trail A to trail B.
Members focused on the following criteria:
- Keeping status quo
- Public Safety
- Environmental concerns and carbon emissions
- Completion of the Active Transportation Master Plan prior to considering any future use of ATV's within the public realm
- Economic drivers and tourism
Members came up with a recommendation that will go to Committee of the Whole on May 4th, 2021. P. Warren and D. Pearson will fine tune the comments and rationale and send the final draft to the ORV Task Force and Council in preparation for the May 4th Committee of the Whole meeting.
