Easement Partnerships - Liza Hancock

Liza Hancock joined the meeting via telephone. She spoke of the potential of CKLEAC partnering in the monitoring of an easement for Conservation that she is interested in putting on her property in the geographic Eldon Township. Liza reported that in the last few days, The Land Between agreed to be a Steward for the project.

Liza also mentioned another project she was working on – Liza met with the City of Kawartha Lakes Parks and Recreation department to discuss

  • possible land donations that could be used for orchards, with the harvest being donated to Kawartha Lakes Food Source
  • replacing the Ash canopy with fruit trees
  • using fruit trees for memorial trees
  • encouraging planners and developers to include fruit trees in future development projects

There has been discussion around Orchard Park land potentially being donated as a result.

D.Lowles has been working on a report on the Tree Cutting By-Law with summer student D.Hahn. Upon completion, they hope to present the report to the committee, and then follow up with presenting it to Council.

S.Blayney reported the Healthy Environment Committee is scheduled to meet next week and intend to form an action plan.

S.Blayney reported that 48 gardens have been registered on the Pollinator Pathway. A total of 96 signs have been printed and are available at the Service Centers for $7.00 per sign. S. Blayney aims to have all of the gardens plotted and printed on the Map by Pollination Week next year. The Bee City workshop held in King City on September 25th, 2018 had a very good turnout with Bee Cities from all over Ontario in attendance. Four representatives from Kawartha Lakes were there.

S.Blayney reported on the Landfill Project, and that Kerri Snoddy, Waste Management Technician II stated that it must be monitored to ensure the safety and security of the site. A partnership between the City of Kawartha Lakes and Fleming College, will start up in 2019 for monitoring the site.

EAC's in Surrounding Areas - K. Repka

K. Repka absent for the meeting

Provincial Gas Tax - P. Warren

P. Warren absent for the meeting

Presentations During Committee Meetings - D. Grignon

D. Grignon suggested a more formal process should be required for those interested in making presentations at CKLEAC meetings. Discussion ensued, and it was agreed that some guidelines and time restrictions be put in place for future presentations. Perhaps a template or form could be created to assist in the process.

Youth Environmental Hero Award

D.Pearson explained that more information is required for the Environmental Hero Awards. D. Pearson advised that decisions need to be made about what the award will be, criteria, timelines, possible categories, and advertising methods. Suggestions for advertising included the use of the City website, school websites, social media, BOB fm and contacting schools, particularly eco schools. D. Grignon suggested the age range should be kindergarten to grade 8, and a second category for high school students.   Suggestions for potential awards included plaques, pizza parties, and tree plantings.
